Five Local Wineries to Visit

Halloween is over, which means we’re in official Fall mode. So break out the holiday gear, and when you’re tired of decorating or making holiday plans, take a break and head to one of these five local wineries that Texas has blessed us with. 

1. In Contrada Vineyard + Kitchen – 27490 Smithson Valley Rd 78261

Want to take a mini-vacation to the Italian countryside without ever having to hop on a plane? At In Contrada Vineyard on the far north side of San Antonio, you can sit amidst the vines and calm breezes as if you’re halfway across the world. Open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays; this weekend retreat offers the views and tastes of a perfectly-placed Texas vineyard. Events that include live music, wine tastings, and housemade brick oven pizzas happen at various times on the weekend, so check out the website ahead of time to make your plan. In addition, In Contrada Vineyard + Kitchen can organize private weekend wine tastings for groups of up to 20. 

2. Oak Valley Vineyards – 27315 Natural Bridge Cavern Road 78266

This quaint and exclusive winery also happens to house an award-winning restaurant in its main quarters. Head to Oak Valley Vineyards to enjoy a beautiful date night with your loved one, where staff can perfectly pair your fine dining to the perfect wine. Views are incredibly romantic, so much so that many have planned their Big Day in the vines. If you can’t make it out during dinner, head there for a fabulous Sunday Brunch with amazing views and delicious food. 

3. Dry Comal Creek – 1741 Herbelin Rd. 78132

This New Braunfels gem has been dazzling Texans for years with its knock-out wines and weekend entertainment. Visitors can sit outside on the giant covered patio and enjoy 11 different locally-made wines. If that wasn’t enough, you could even join a wine club where members have access to members-only happy hours, including tastings, food, and live music. In addition, fall hours have recently been announced, so check the website for changes and take some time to plan an extraordinary date night or girls’ day out at Dry Comal Creek. 

4. Sister Creek Vineyards – 1142 Sisterdale Hwy 78006

For 33 years, the barn at Sister Creek Vineyards has housed many a wine-tasting and several thousands of loyal customers over their existence. The physical structure is an authentic 1885 cotton gin, and they’ve left some of the original equipment for display in their tasting room so that history buffs will have a treat visiting. Their grapes are aged in oak barrels over the years and sold as delicious, palate-pleasing wines across several states in the US. So head to the winery to enjoy some quiet time outside with your favorite bottle. 

5. La Cruz de Comal Wines – 7405 FM 2722 78132

It’s Texas Hill Country wine-making at its finest. Though the production is small, the vineyard can boast that each bottle is made with the immense amount of care it takes to produce truly fine wine. The wines are produced using only the crops of their 3-acre estate vineyard, and the red wines are never filtered, leaving the sediment that often indicates a craft wine. You can schedule a private tasting or attend one in the tasting room during operating hours, but prepare to wait with many other anxious Texans looking to get a taste of France right here in Texas.
