San Antonio’s weather is infamously hot, so who wouldn’t enjoy an ice-cold beer? This beautiful city has several local breweries that you could visit, but let us help you narrow down your initial visit list by suggesting four local breweries:

Sometimes the time comes to take a plunge, and the Merriman family is diving in. Man Overboard Brewing, just steps from the Pearl, will specialize in Belgian and American beer. Led and owned by Navy veteran Ron and his son Justin, the team will be combining tried and true classics with the occasional adventurous new flavor. 2. Roadmap Brewing Co. – 723 N. Alamo St. – RoadmapBrewing.com
Wedding gifts usually consist of fancy toasters and collectible china dishes; however, Dustin and Hannah received a wedding gift that changed their lives: a homebrew beer kit. They spent their newlywed weekends making craft brew when they realized this was a serious passion. His dad stepped in to help the couple get their brewery up and running, and the rest is history. Now you can visit the brewery to try unique tastes such as “Minivan Dad” double IPA, “Late Night Polka Party” Dark Lager, and “Minor in Italian” Pilsner Italiano. As if the good beer wasn’t enough, you might also bump into the assistant brewer (their dog Wesley) or the assistant to the associate brewer (their cat, Simcoe), and who doesn’t love animal employees?
3. Ranger Creek Brewing – 4834 Whirlwind Drive – DrinkRangerCreek.com
Play tourist in your hometown and head to Ranger Creek “Brewstillery” for a unique beer and bourbon tour. Try three samples of their products, and see where all the magic happens behind the scenes. Try the “San Antonio Lager,” the “Love-Struck Hefe,” or the “Sunday Morning Coming Down” If beer isn’t your thing, you can try their small-batch whiskeys, including “.36 Straight Bourbon,” “Rimfire,” and “.44 Rye.”
4. Black Laboratory Brewing – 1602 E. Houston St. – com
What do you get when two scientists like to drink beer? You get Black Laboratory Brewing. Tim Casteneda & Jeff Weihe dreamed of using chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology to create the perfect craft beers, so they took their food science and quality assurance experience and made a gem on San Antonio’s east side. If you’re not in the mood for a liquid lager, try something from the “Magic Beer Slush Machine,” including the “Blue Coconut’ Bindi Blonde Ale’ Beer Slush” or the “Tigers Blood ‘All Dressed Up’ Lime Gose Beer Slush.” Try limited-release beers before they disappear, and enjoy events at the brewery, including Trivia Night and food truck pop-ups.

If craft beer makes you feel as stuck-up as a wine snob, head to Second Pitch Beer Company before you write off craft beer altogether. Their approach is a “brewery-next-door” establishment, offering educational events that help you expand your palate and decipher flavors and tastes. With plenty of social events on the calendar, you’re likely to find other San Antonians who sip from the same cup of tea (or beer) as you do, with yoga meet-ups, trivia nights, and Bring Your Own Vinyl Sundays. Try one of their four flagship beers: “Hometown Lager,” “Summer Lightning Ale,” “Meetin in the Middle IPA,” and “Hot Wells Hefeweizen.”
6. Weathered Souls Brewing Company – 606 Embassy Oaks – Weatheredsouls.beer
Who doesn’t love an independent, locally-owned business? Weathered Souls is an old-school yet welcoming brewery who produce their beer. They buy their grain locally and deliver it to San Antonio and South Texas. With the fermenters in sight, you can rest assured that your beer was kegged only a couple of days before you drank it!
